Description
These 2025 Native American $1 Coins with circulating finishes have never been placed into circulation. They were minted at the Philadelphia Mint. This is a single coin!
Authorized by Public Law 110-82, the Native American $1 Coin Program was established in 2009 to honor the significant contributions of Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to U.S. history and development. The 2025 coin commemorates Mary Kawena Pukui, a Hawaiian scholar, author, composer, hula expert, and educator.
Designed by Christina Hess and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the coin’s reverse features Pukui adorned with a hibiscus flower, a kukui nut lei, and a muʻumuʻu decorated with an aloha print. Stylized water designs appear in the background alongside inscriptions of her name, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “$1.” The phrase “Nānā I Ke Kumu,” meaning “Look to The Source,” references a series of books she helped create with the Queen Liliʻuokalani Children’s Center, reflecting her role as a key consultant on Hawaiian knowledge, symbolized by the kukui tree’s leaves and nuts.
