The 3-cent silver coin, also known as the “Trime,” was issued by the United States Mint from 1851 to 1873. It was created as a result of the growing need for small change during the mid-19th century, especially for the purchase of low-cost goods such as postage stamps. The coin was designed by James B. Longacre, who also designed the famous Indian Head cent.
