Description
The War Nickel Set refers to a series of U.S. five-cent coins minted between 1942 and 1945, primarily during World War II. These coins were made with a special alloy consisting of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, replacing the usual nickel content, which was diverted for wartime use in military equipment. The obverse features a profile of Thomas Jefferson, while the reverse shows a depiction of Monticello, his Virginia estate. These “silver nickels” are distinctive for their large mint mark “P,” “D,” or “S” above the dome of Monticello, indicating the minting location.
/photo is one of two sets. Both same style.
